A micro WDR USB camera module is a compact embedded vision camera designed for robots, grippers, AMRs, inspection devices and edge AI systems that must capture usable images in high-contrast lighting, such as bright loading bays, dark warehouse aisles, backlit workcells, machine interiors and outdoor shadow transitions. UC-501-WDR combines a 15×15mm form factor, UVC USB output and WDR imaging for space-limited robot vision designs.
Shenzhen Novel Electronics Limited Unveils New 15x15mm WDR USB Camera to Conquer Complex Lighting in Robotics and Embedded Vision
September 12, 2025
Shenzhen, China – Shenzhen Novel Electronics Limited, a professional specialist in embedded vision solutions, today announced the upcoming launch of its latest innovation: the UC-501-WDR, an ultra-compact 15x15mm, 2-Megapixel USB camera module featuring advanced Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) technology.
This new module is engineered specifically to empower the next generation of robots, drones, and industrial monitoring systems that operate in real-world, challenging lighting conditions.
For too long, the performance of advanced robotic and automated systems has been constrained by the limitations of standard cameras. In environments with high-contrast scenes—such as warehouses with bright loading bays and dark aisles, or outdoor agricultural robots moving between direct sunlight and shadow—traditional cameras fail to capture critical details, leading to errors in navigation, inspection, and safety.
The UC-501-WDR directly solves this critical challenge. Its industrial-grade WDR technology allows the camera to simultaneously capture crystal-clear details in both intensely bright areas and deep shadows within the same frame. This provides machines with the robust, adaptive vision required for reliable operation in the unpredictable real world.
"Our customers in the robotics and industrial automation sectors are constantly pushing the boundaries of what's possible," said a spokesperson for Shenzhen Novel Electronics. "They operate on factory floors, in warehouses, and out in the field—not in a lab with perfect lighting. We developed the UC-501-WDR to give their machines the reliable, all-conditions vision they need to succeed in those environments."
Key features of the new module include:
Where WDR Actually Helps Robots
WDR is most useful when the robot camera sees bright and dark areas in the same frame. Typical examples include AMRs moving from warehouse aisles toward loading doors, inspection robots looking into machine interiors with reflective metal parts, service robots working near windows, and edge AI devices installed in backlit cabinets or factory workcells.
In these situations, a standard USB camera may overexpose the bright area or lose detail in the shadows. UC-501-WDR is designed to keep more usable image detail across both regions, helping the host system receive a more stable visual input for monitoring, teleoperation, inspection or AI-assisted analysis.
What WDR Solves — and What It Does Not
WDR helps robots handle high-contrast scenes, but it is not a replacement for every camera technology. If the main problem is very low light, a STARVIS2 low-light camera may be better. If the target is moving fast and rolling-shutter distortion is the issue, a global shutter camera should be evaluated. If the robot needs wide-area awareness, a fisheye or wide-angle camera may be more suitable.
UC-501-WDR is best used when the main problem is lighting contrast, not motion distortion, long-distance inspection or thermal detection.

| Robot Vision Problem | Best Camera Direction |
|---|---|
| Bright door + dark aisle in one frame | UC-501-WDR |
| Backlit cabinet or machine interior | UC-501-WDR |
| Very dim warehouse or night vision | IMX678 / IMX585 STARVIS2 |
| Moving marker or docking target distortion | Global shutter USB camera |
| Robot blind spots / wide awareness | Fisheye USB camera |
| Host bandwidth pressure | H.264 USB camera |
| Wet, dusty or outdoor robot | Waterproof USB camera head |
